KENNY ROGERS & THE FIRST EDITION | THE FIRST EDITION & THE FIRST EDITION'S 2ND (2 LPS ON 1CD/LIMITED EDITION)
In the early sixties, folk music was enjoying enormous success thanks to millions of record buyers who were buying the music of the legendary bands like The New Christy Minstrels. As the times and music styles changed, several of its key members moved on to become well known rock entities like Gene Clark (The Byrds), Larry Ramos (The Association) as well as the soon to be superstars Kenny Rogers, Terry Williams, Mike Settle and Thelma Comacho who would become The First Edition. Initially a Mike Settle and Terry Williams creation, The First Edition grew out of their desire to write more hip material and expand on each of the musicians/writers’ expertise in the studio and on stage. As the new band was developing , Terry Williams who was born into a musical family, helped The First Edition maneuver a major audition thanks to the help of his mother who worked for Jimmy Bowen the label boss at Reprise Records. Terry recently shared that “When we were ready, I phoned mom to have her set up an in office audition with Jimmy. We walked into his office and sang live for him. He gave us a budget for a four song demo which we did and he loved it and put his new young producer Mike Post on the job.” After the 1967 release of their first album simply titled The First Edition, radio and retail responded immediately thanks to the smash hit offering of the underground garage band classic Just Dropped In (To See What Condition My Condition Was In). Numerous appearances followed on The Ed Sullivan Show, The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour, and the rest as they say is classic rock and roll history. This song went on to even more fame years later as it was featured in the smash film The Big Lebowski, further making the tune and the band hip again to a younger audience. Along with the aforementioned hit 45 Just Dropped In, The First Edition album was a brilliant debut release featuring four unique personalities, each with impeccable musicianship skills and voices that were magical, especially with their four part harmonies on tracks like the folk acid rocker Shadow In The Corner Of Your Mind, the acoustic balladry of If Wishes Were Horses and the stellar sunshine pop of Mike Settle’s brilliant I Was The Loser and Marcia: 2 A.M. Their next album was even more of an excursion into the underground rock experience with The First Edition’s 2nd. This much emulated masterpiece contains some of the finest pop manna ever recorded from the era with the stellar Kenny Rogers/Terry Williams classic If I Could Only Change Your Mind. Employing the wall of sound technique, a symphonic back drop and the four part harmonies of the band, this tune truly set the stage for the rest of the fine l.p. More classic First Edition sounds abound with their follow- up pop smash Only Me featuring the vocals of Mike Settle and Terry Williams, Thelma Comacho’s classic ballad I Passed You By, the northern soul vibe of A Good Kind Of Hurt, and the classic Kenny Rogers sound of Are My Thoughts With You. Kenny Rogers & The First Edition would undeniably go on to become one of the biggest pop rock acts for well over a decade, delivering a treasure trove of music , which brought the aura and feel of a newly reformed spirit of the 60’s, which was truly needed during an era of turbulence, war and change.
